I knew from the moment she walked in through my door that she was trouble. The rose red of her lips, the sensuous curves of her shape, her stride as she walked to my desk. I had been alone most of the night, just another lonely night in a busy city. Outside my window I could hear the kid on the corner calling for the occasional passerby to purchase a copy of the Sunday edition, a cacophony of car horns, and the aroma of exhaust, cigarette smoke, and cheap gin. She wasn’t a woman of the night, but she had an ere of promiscuity about her. Deep brown eyes stared through me like I was a sheet of tissue paper. The woman took a seat like she owned the place, and I sat there with a half-cocked grin. The sign that hung outside the door? Private detective for hire. Without even knowing her name, I was suddenly entranced, caught by this mysterious stranger that made herself at home before me. From her purse she produced a gold cigarette case, pulled one for herself and, with ease, held it between two fingers.
“Permit me,” I said, withdrawing a lighter from the desk.
The stranger’s face was caught in the glow of the flame, and dazzling sparkle in her eyes and the cigarette took. She took a long drag and puffed the smoke out, eyes locked on mine.
“I didn’t catch your name,” I said.
“Names are for friends, love, so I don’t need one.” Her voice carried like a song. “But you may call me Susana.”
“What can I do for you, Susana?”
Another drag off the cigarette, the cherry illuminated her lips.
“I have a job for you, I can’t pay right away, but know that you will be dutifully taken care of at the conclusion of our transaction.”
In a city under the dominion of organized crime, vice, and jazz music, I should have declined her offer then, but this seeming Aphrodite had peeked my interest.
“A written contract of intent shall suffice then, and you may consider me retained, miss Susana.”
The job was simple, just a gig I was needing-trail a few people leaving a couple of the clubs around the city, make sure certain individuals were left to their business, and intervene only when strictly necessary. I drew up a retainer, and she signed under her assumed name. If I had been a smarter man, I’d have told her to pack up and skip the joint. I didn’t. She left me as quickly as she came in, and I remained at my desk the whole time. I wiped my mug, realized a bead of sweat had gathered above my forehead embarrassingly enough, and reviewed the instructions she’d left for me. The clubs I knew were controlled by the illicit profiteers of the city, men who had the police on their payroll. If I knew how much trouble I was about to get myself into, I’d have forgotten the job on the spot, but I was all washed up. She made me eager. I reached to my desk and checked my handgun. The old .45 had watched my back for the better part of a decade. Nothing ventured, I thought, nothing gained.
#EricGoldberg the animation supervisor of the #Genie from #Aladdin sketched this tribute to #RobinWilliams as his character portrayed as a constallation looking down at the world and it made me cry. Sometimes the funniest people are the saddest and loneliest inside. I wonder what he would think if he could see how much everyone loved him? #RIPRobinWilliams #Genieyourefree
